What's Fridu ?
Fridu.org is Fulup & Dominig's technology playground. It mostly contains tips and faq on recent technologies that we've been playing with. Anything we write on Fridu is done outside of our professional work context and none of our current or past employers and customers have participated or even been consulted about its content. Fridu is 100% part of our free time, and everything including hosting is funded out of our pocket money and used exclusively to support friends and non-profit organisations.
What's does Fridu mean?
Fridu is the composition of two Breton worlds "Fri" for "nose" and "Du" for black. Fridu which translates in "BlackNose" is a typical name for a dog, as many Breton dogs have a black nose.
Whose dog is Fridu then?
Fridu was Fulup's teddy dog. Fridu disappeared more than 10 years ago when she was still a nice little girl. While she had some suspicion on who the criminal could be, nothing was ever proved.
What did Fridu used to be ?
Fridu used to be a SOHO consulting company that was established in 1996 to promote open source solutions in IT and Telecom industry. As today the two main contributors have full time jobs, Fridu currently focuses 100% on non-profit activities.
What is Fridu today ?
Technically Fridu is nothing more than a small Linux computer sitting somewhere on the Internet. Obviously the two founders while working full time for IT companies still need a toy to play with new technologies! We use Fridu to publish open source stuff that might be useful to the community, as well as a mail-mta, web-server, sip-proxy, hosting facility for some non-profit organizations such as Diwan schools, KEAV.org, PortAnna.org, ...
Fridu origin:
- Fridu.com was started in 1996 by Fulup Ar Foll (Philippe Le Foll). At that time he was associate professor at the university of South Brittany in computer science and independant consultant. He launched the site fridu.com to publish his object version of the tcl/tk language named jtcl, and other related open source based project as jWrap mostly based around embedded distributed testing facilities for telecommunications.
- Fridu.org was launched in May 2006 by Dominique Le Foll (Dominig Ar Foll) with the aim of publishing selected open source projects in the same spirit as the original fridu.com, as well as to help some non-profit organizations to leverage new free Internet technologies such as SIP, VPN, CMS, AntiSpam, ....
- fridu.org & fridu.net are used for non-profit activities only.
- fridu.com & fridu.eu are dormant, but reserved for further hypothetical commercial consulting activities.
- fridu.co.uk is Dominique Le Foll's (Dominig) personal domain.
