Both the Internet and the telco-world have evolved their own identity solutions, protocols and frameworks, because they have grown separately. On the way from the Plain Old Telephony System (POTS) to the Next Generation Network (NGN) the telco community developed and standardized the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) as a framework to describe the implementation of telco services based on the Internet Protocol (IP). Although IMS standards foresee the development of advanced identity mechanisms, they still specify a separated and rather closed world. Therefore, interoperability between the Internet and IMS is still an issue and there is a growing need for inter-working. Telcos develop Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) to offer their assets to the Web community or to a 3rd party service provider. Furthermore, they implement complex service scenarios containing Internet and telco elements. This paper wil explain primarily how Liberty based protocl can be of use in the IMS context |

 | Many people have not realised that as soon as they connect to the Internet, the large majority of software frameworks which provide the service are not owned by any corporation and are actually provided by the Community as Open Source. The fact that critical software frameworks which are so important for the world economy are managed by a ruleless system can be difficult to understand. This article introduces the reader to a definition of Open Source, why it has been so successful for the Telcos and the consequences of that change for the industry. |

| While traditional paper based identity and digital identity share the same fundamentals and aim towards similar goals, they nevertheless have some significant differences. This paper provides a high level introduction to the fundamentals of Identity – its technical constituents, its requirements, and its risks. It closes with an explanation of how Project Liberty provides solutions to many of the issues raised by next generation digital identities. |

| This paper presents an innovative service called SIM strong authentication service that extends the usage of GSM SIM authentication to Internet Web services. The goal of this proof-of-concept is to demonstrate the possibility of implementing innovative service in a heterogeneous environment using Liberty Alliance Federation Standard. Telenor, Axalto, Linus and Oslo University College have implemented a proof-of-concept prototype in Oslo. The architecture is based on a multi-vendor environment where SUN provides the Identity Provider, IBM the Identity Provider and Service Provider Proxy to connect non-Liberty Alliance Service Providers to the system, Lucent Technologies the Radius server and Ulticom the SS7 MAP Authentication Gateway connecting the prototype to the Telenor mobile network. A typical user flow for such a service would be the case of a user browsing on the World Wide Web from home, a customer premise, an Internet café, etc. When trying to access a protected resource such as Webmail, company portal, or bank account, he logs on to the requested secured site simply by placing his mobile phone close by and communicating with his PC via Bluetooth, or using a SIM card-equipped dongle, card reader, or 2G/3G PC card. |

 | This paper aims to summarize the study of a wireless operators service network and its ecosystem for creating and delivering mobile services with strong identity and privacy protection concerns. Available mainstream specifications and off-the-shelf products that are compliant with these specifications have been used during this work. This is a Turkcell project made in Turkey. Turkcell delivers value added services to more than 24,3 million subscribers and works with more than 220 companies as service providers.

| Federated identity management is a recent, vast and promising area. It has received a lot of attention from various industries, including the telecom industry. Some aspects have already been standardized as part of forums such as 3GPP, OASIS, OMA and Liberty Alliance. In the context of converged networks, the overall goal of this effort is to “identityenable” selected telecom network elements and allow converged operators to gain the benefits of standards-based identity and data federation technologies. By empowering themselves to play a key role in federated identity management, network operators reduce the likelihood of becoming “dumb pipes” and create around them a rich ecosystem of services and business relationships. |

| This white paper shows how mobile operators can implement Liberty-enabled solutions to meet the needs of both the Identity Federation and Identity Web Services. Pure mobile operators can achieve more business opportunities by implementing open interfaces with third party service providers, while the same solution can be used to de-fragment an Identity Management infrastructure. For operators offering both fixed and mobile products, the solution can help to unify the domains, as well as reinforce customer loyalty by creating additional benefits for customers with several access methods, including fixed/mobile telephony and fixed/ wireless broadband access. The white paper outlines a number of technical use cases to illustrate the implementation, which can largely be done on top of an existing infrastructure, and discusses the network entities included in the solution as well as its functionality. |

| PayCircle has since long identified the need to integrate payment with mechanisms for identity management, user confirmation and privacy enforcement. These requirements are not specific to payment but apply to the other web service interfaces in the Parlay X suite as well. Liberty phase 3 will specify specific services (SiS) based on the general framework of phase 2. Requirement drafts for a Payment SiS as well as a Wallet SiS are already available. The goal of the investigation is to explore an integration of identity management and payment based on (possibly extended) specifications of the Liberty Alliance Project and PayCircle.mailto:charge@once |

This white paper gives developers an overview of the Liberty Alliance’s Identity Web Services Framework (ID-WSF) and discusses deployment strategies. The paper details olutions from Sun Microsystems and Nokia that will enable developers to architect develop and deploy identity-based web services to fixed and mobile devices based on the ID-WSF protocols. In addition, this paper provides a sample web service use case as ell as a real-life implementation implemented by AOL. Knowledge of the basic Liberty architecture components is assumed. The Liberty Alliance has published white papers on its architecture, which can be downloaded at http://www.projectliberty.org/resources/whitepapers. In addition, the full set of Liberty Alliance specifications can be reviewed and downloaded at http://www.projectliberty.org/specs |
